Job Summary:
- Office-based work, laboratory work, site visits, and inspections; review and evaluate safety analyses for the operation of uranium fuel enrichment facilities, fuel fabrication facilities, spent fuel pools, dry cask storage facilities, and geologic repositories; conduct independent risk analyses of these nuclear facilities using proprietary and commercial engineering software; design and conduct corrosion tests of materials used in nuclear facilities; prepare technical reports and oral presentations; develop new client contacts, exploit existing business opportunities, prepare proposals and project plans to conduct applied research and development and regulatory analyses related to radioactive waste disposal and nuclear power plants.
Education/Experience:
- Requires a MS or a PhD degree in Materials Science or Engineering, Mechanical or Corrosion Engineering, or Electrochemistry with at least a 3.5 GPA. Must have 3-5 years of experience in the commercial nuclear power industry evaluating engineering materials used for long-term storage and disposal of spent nuclear fuel and nuclear power plant reactor and steam supply system components. Must have demonstrated experience in both modeling and performing laboratory tests of corrosion processes that affect nuclear power plant systems and spent fuel storage and disposal casks and canisters; demonstrated experience is required in one or more of the following: (a) methods and analyses for assessing the material and structural integrity of Zircaloy clad fuels (b) the design, fabrication, and performance of neutron absorber materials used to control criticality in spent fuel pools and dry casks (c) systems and procedures for inspecting and monitoring the condition of piping, pressure vessels, valves, steam generators, and pumps used in nuclear power plants, and (d) methods for assessing the effect of high radiation fields on metallic and non-metallic components; familiarity with the Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL) Report on aging management for the U.S. light water reactor fleet is a plus. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
