Job Summary:
- Perform fundamental and applied research through the development and application of advanced lifing methods for use in material and structural reliability assessments, with particular emphasis on analytical and numerical methods and software development with application to fatigue and fracture of metallic materials; develop, test, and implement numerical algorithms for structural integrity and life prediction in user-friendly software formats using advanced engineering mechanics and mathematical principles; validate numerical predictions against experimental or analytical results; prepare written reports and manuals to document results, and provide guidance for software use; participate in and eventually lead individual and collaborative research projects as well as develop, promote, and write proposals for research programs. Interact with both commercial and government clients; manage tasks and projects to successful completion within technical, budget and schedule constraints; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with colleagues as well as current and potential customers; contribute to and prepare proposals, reports, and technical papers.
Education/Experience:
- Requires a MS or Ph.D.degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering, or equivalent discipline with at least a 3.25 GPA. Master’s degree requires 2-7 years of related experience. Ph.D. degree requires 0-2 years of related experience. Must have demonstrated experience, including experience during school, in software development and FORTRAN programming; engineering expertise in fracture and fatigue, probabilistic mechanics or computational material modeling is required; extensive experience with development of FORTRAN computer programming and software development is required; must be familiar with computational methods in engineering; excellent interpersonal communications skills (both oral and written) required for interaction with senior staff, program teams, and clients; must be able to work independently with relatively little supervision and function effectively as part of project teams. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
