SwRI staff has extensive experience in the design, development, and evaluation of vehicle systems and hardware.

Research and development of hybrid vehicle technologies and applications continue to be a prime activity for the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) advanced vehicle technology engineers and scientists. From developing mathematical models for simulation to actual retrofitting of hybrid hardware onto selected vehicle platforms, the advanced vehicle technology group has more than 50 man-years of combined experience related to all aspects of hybrid vehicle research.

Other Hybrid Vehicle Capabilities

Controls and control algorithms for hybrid vehicle power systems are also developed and evaluated on a regular basis by SwRI. Some of the parameters used in the overall hybrid vehicle design process include:

  • Control of mechanical and electrical power sources

  • Efficient use of regenerative braking

  • Low-emission engine strategies

Other services offered by the SwRI advanced vehicle technology group include:

  • Hybrid battery testing

  • State of charge analysis

  • Lifetime studies

Electric Hybrid Vehicle Capabilities

SwRI continues to be involved in both military and commercial applications to increase awareness and use of electric hybrid vehicles and components. For example, a FedEx-led investigatory group, including SwRI, has been investigating to determine the effect on vehicle emissions through the use of a hybrid electric powertrain for the company's regular delivery truck.
