SwRI: Fuel Systems and Contamination Research Impulse Test

Most industrial machinery dealing with fluids experience cyclic pressure load from time to time. Unlike the steady-state load, cyclic load can cause more severe malfunctions or damage and eventually shortens service life of the machines.

Test Stands for Impulse Testing

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) staff have developed three dedicated test stands to perform impulse tests to help component and machinery manufacturers to evaluate the cyclic load environment. These impulse test stands cover a very wide range of pressures such as:

  • Low Pressure Range: 0–300 psi

  • Medium Pressure Range: 0–4,000 psi

  • High Pressure Range: 0–30,000 psi

These test stands are carefully developed and can be used to conduct impulse tests in accordance with ISO, SAE, and Military specifications. They can also be used to conduct nonstandard or industrial-specific impulse tests to evaluate components such as:

  • Fuel hoses

  • Oil hoses

  • Seals

  • Fuel rails and injectors

  • Pressure sensors

  • Fuel filters

  • Oil filters
