| |
 |
| |
The Mercedes OM646LA Wear Test at
SwRI evaluates a lubricants ability to prevent
engine wear |
Mercedes OM646LA wear test method CEC
L-99-08 is offered by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to evaluate engine oil
performance with regards to low-temperature lubricant thickening and
component
wear under severe operating conditions.

Test Fixtures
A Mercedes 2.2-liter
common rail, inline 4-cylinder, turbocharged, direct-injected automotive
diesel engine (OM646LA) mounted on an engine dynamometer test stand is
used for this test.
CEC L-99-08
Test Parameters
The 300-hour,
15-phase test cycle utilizes idle, part-load, and full-load operating
conditions along with a cold engine soak every hour. Oil additions are
determined by sump oil level.
CEC-L-99-08 Test Part Evaluations
Camshafts, bore, tappets, bearings and
piston rings are measured for wear. Engine oil sump, timing
cover, rocker cover and valve deck are rated for sludge
deposits.
