SwRI excels in performing one-of-a-kind corrosion tests that simulate the application environment, design, and stresses.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) excels in performing one-of-a-kind corrosion tests that simulate the application environment, design, and stresses. Tests of this kind include:

  • High pressure

  • Temperature

  • Sour gas testing of full-size coupling stocks

  • Environmental testing of high-pressure compressed natural gas cylinders

  • Simulation of boric acid leakage effects in nuclear reactors

  • Corrosion fatigue testing of large tubulars in sour environments

  • Simulation of the corrosion of radiator components in U.S. Marine Corps high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV)

SwRI also has constructed pilot-scale facilities of novel chemical processes and evaluated various materials of construction in such a simulated plant condition.

In addition to unique, application-specific tests, SwRI has the full capability to perform standardized tests as well as tests oriented for fundamental understanding of corrosion phenomena.

Standard Corrosion Tests

  • Measurement of electrochemical parameters (ASTM G5, G59, G61, G102) related to modeling localized corrosion phenomena

  • Identification of microbiologically influenced corrosion mechanisms

  • Different types of stress corrosion cracking tests for oil and gas, chemical, and other applications (ASTM G38, G39, NACE TM0177, NACE TM0198)

  • Cyclic, environmental test chamber to test coatings and corrosion preventive compounds (ASTM G60)

  • NACE tests to determine sulfide stress cracking resistance of materials (NACE TM0177, Method A, B, C and D)

  • High-pressure, high-temperature testing in many oil and gas and chemical process environments (ASTM G111)
