Southwest Research Institute receives $13.1 million U.S. Air Force contract

For immediate release

San Antonio — June 21, 2017 — Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has been awarded a $13.1 million contract by the United States Air Force, Air Force Material Command, Robins Air Force Base, Ga., to provide engineering services for aircraft electronic attack pods. The project award is a follow-on to work previously performed by SwRI.

“We are proud to continue this important work for the United States Air Force,” said Nils Smith, vice president of SwRI’s Defense and Intelligence Solutions Division. “We look forward to incorporating advanced engineering services and capabilities to support these vital systems.”

Attack pods are countermeasure devices mounted on an aircraft and operated from the aircraft cockpit. The pods contain a suite of electronic instrumentation — receivers, antennas, and transmitters — designed to alter the flight of an incoming enemy missile or prevent an aircraft from being tracked by enemy forces by jamming radar signals.

SwRI will provide software engineering, evaluation, and support, as well as system testing and evaluation for AN/ALQ-131 and AN/ALQ-184 attack pods. AN/ALQ-131 pods are found on a host of U.S. military aircraft including the F-16, A-10, F-15, and C-130, while the AN/ALQ-184 pods are on F-16 and A-10 aircraft.

The five-year project, which will be performed at Robins Air Force Base, is expected to end in May 2022.
