Gas Compression Pulsation Filters
Designing and troubleshooting filter systems that can eliminate the adverse effects of pulsations created by reciprocating or centrifugal gas compressors. Our Piping Design and Analysis Group designs pulsation filters for gas compressor installations; our Plant Engineering Section troubleshoots pulsation problems at existing gas compressor field installations.

Gas Dynamics
Analysis and modeling of wave propagation in compressible gases, (2) speed of sound determination in compressible gases, (3) analysis, modeling, and measurement of compressible gas flows through subsonic, sonic, or supersonic nozzles (i.e., converging-diverging cross sections), and (4) shock wave analysis. We deal with real gas effects associated with vehicle aerodynamics, blast and shock, transient analysis in pipe networks, acoustics (wave propagation), etc .

Gas Meter Flow Facility
The SwRI Metering Research Facility (MRF) is a world-class, high-accuracy natural gas flow measurement facility used for flow meter development, calibration, and testing. Test conditions closely simulate those found in the field. Key features of the MRF include (1) measurement traceability to the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, (2) high-precision measurement accuracy, and (3) a broad range of test conditions (i.e., test gas pressures between 15 and 1,200 psig, test gas temperatures between 45 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and flow rates up to 1,650,000 standard cubic feet per day).

Gas Turbines--Life Assessment
Hot section component life depends on the coating and material degradation. At SwRI we have performed life assessment of gas turbine components by performing condition assessment on various land base and aero derivative engine components. Over the years we have identified base material and coating in-service degradation mechanisms and developed COALIFE for determining service life metallic and ceramic coatings. The COATLIF model was validated using the field data.

Gas Wells
Much of the fluid mechanics work performed for the oil and gas industry involves issues related to oil wells or gas wells, since most wells flow a combination of oil and gas throughout the productive life of the well. This includes experimental investigations and paper studies of problems related to production of gas from onshore and offshore wells.

Guardrails--Cars
We bang cars and trucks into guardrails, bridge rails, light poles, mail box supports, etc,... (anything that might be installed on the side of the road) We evaluate the performance of the guardrail, light poles, etc,... for their ability to NOT fatally injure the occupants inside the errant vehicle. We don't really care what happens to the vehicle as long as the passenger compartment remains secure and relatively undeformed and the vehicle is brought to a controlled stop. These tests are done according to the procedures and criteria set forth in The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350.
