| IEEE - 802-11 |
IEEE 802.11 is a family of communication protocol standards for wireless networks, similar to the Ethernet standard for wired networks. IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g are typically used to connect laptop computers to an access point mounted inside buildings (including many Starbucks, airports, and home offices). The indoor range is generally under 300 ft. |

| Impact testing is part of the DOT performance specifications for both vehicles and safety components. SwRI has active programs to perform impact and crash testing of vehicles with specific emphasis on crash barriers.
Additional impact testing of vehicles can be done to satisfy specific client requirements, including blast and projectile impacts. In addition, as part of an ongoing activity, SwRI perform testing of motorcycle helmets. As part of its motorcycle helmet testing program impact resistance of helmets is characterized. The helmets are mounted on a magnesium headform and drop onto a variety of surfaces and the acceleration response of the headform recorded. The testing is typically performed in accordance with FMVSS No. 218, but specialized testing of helmets can be done as well. |

| Integrated Circuits--Failure Analysis |
| The SwRI Component-Analysis Group specializes in failure analysis of electronic and electrical components. Included in the Group's experience are (1) passive components (e.g., resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, switches, etc.), (2) electromagnetic devices (e.g., relays, motors, etc.), (3) miscellaneous devices (e.g., transducers, sensors, fuses, lamps, etc.), (4) discrete semiconductor devices (e.g., transistors, diodes, optoelectronic devices, silicon controlled rectifiers, etc.), and (5) low-density integrated circuits (e.g., operational amplifiers, simple logic blocks, voltage regulators, etc.).
Laboratory equipment supports key failure-analysis operations including photography, optical microscopy, x-radiography, package opening, scanning-electron microscopy, elemental analysis by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, cross sectioning (both mounted and unmounted), microprobing, wet-chemical and plasma etching, hermeticity testing, and particle-impact-noise detectio |

| Intelligent Transportation Systems is the development and maintenance of software and hardware/communications systems to assist in traffic management by Traffic Management Centers and to disseminate traffic information to the traveling public. These systems control field devices such as Dynamic Message Signs, Closed Circuit Television Cameras, Traffic Sensor Devices, Roadway Weather Information Devices, etc., provide feedback to Centers through a Graphical User Interface, and provide information to the general public throughout outlets such as websites and 511 systems. Traffic Management Centers are operated by Departments of Transportation, Toll Authorities, Area Council of Governments, Counties, Cities and other public agencies. |

| Intelligent Tutoring Systems |
| An intelligent tutoring system is educational software containing an artificial intelligence component. The software tracks students' work, tailoring feedback and hints along the way. By collecting information on a particular student's performance, the software can make inferences about strengths and weaknesses, and can suggest additional work. |
