Additional impact testing of vehicles can be done to satisfy specific client requirements, including blast and projectile impacts. In addition, as part of an ongoing activity, SwRI perform testing of motorcycle helmets. As part of its motorcycle helmet testing program impact resistance of helmets is characterized. The helmets are mounted on a magnesium headform and drop onto a variety of surfaces and the acceleration response of the headform recorded. The testing is typically performed in accordance with FMVSS No. 218, but specialized testing of helmets can be done as well.
