X-Radiography
The SwRI Component-Analysis Group has a FeinFocus high-resolution real-time x-radiography system that is equipped with a 5-axis sample-positioning stage. This system facilitates viewing the x-ray image in real time while sample orientation is being manipulated to best show the features of interest. Because of the small source size and high-resolution detector, substantial magnification may be achieved. Accelerating voltages in the range of 30 kV to 160 kV are available. Additionally, conventional film x-ray equipment suitable for larger samples is available through both on-site and off-site contractors.

X-Ray Analysis--Elemental
The SwRI Component-Analysis Group has a Noran energy-dispersive x-ray elemental-analysis system that is installed on a scanning-electron microscope. The analyzer system is equipped with a light-element detector, so all elements, except atomic numbers 1 through 4, are detectable. Software associated with the system provides capabilities for qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, and elemental-density mapping (also called dot mapping). For most elements, the detection threshold is less than 0.5% by weight.

  Environmental Performance of Materials
  Failure Analysis & Technical Services
X-Ray Explosive Item
SwRI has the ability to X-Ray an Explosive Item for reasons of determining if there are any internal components to the item.
  Ballistics and Explosives Range
X-Ray Fluorescence
This testing is for elemental analysis of solid or liquid materials. Elements heavier than sodium can be identified and possibly quantitated using this method.

Sensor Systems and Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Technology Department
X-ray Powder Diffraction
X-ray powder diffractometry
Surface Engineering and Materials Chemistry Section
X-Ray Welds
Examination of welds by X-ray techniques.
