Microscopy--Optical
Transmitted and reflected light, including cross-polarized light; optical petrography and mineralogy; fluid inclusion microthermometry. The Component-Analysis Group has multiple optical microscopes that are routinely used for optical microscopy of electronic components, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and other objects. A high-quality metallurgical microscope (40X to 1500X), which is equipped for bright-field, dark-field, interference-contrast, and fluorescence, and a high-quality zoom macroscope (4X to 80X), which is equipped with both through-the-lens and optical-fiber ring illuminators, form the backbone of the Group's optical-microscopy equipment; both of these microscopes are also equipped with high-resolution color digital cameras. Additionally, the Group has several medium-magnification stereo microscopes that are suitable for visual inspection purposes.
