SwRI is developing an app as part of ARPA-E’s NEXTCAR program that uses roadway connectivity data to tell drivers when to speed up or slow down to avoid red lights. Significantly more energy is used to re-engage vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks, after making a full stop at lights.
