A new SwRI-led study shows that PUNCH’s wide-field imaging could improve space weather forecasting associated with coronal mass ejections. Direct tracking with PUNCH allowed scientists to retroactively forecast this CME’s arrival at Earth (purples), using this simplified model of CME front evolution versus time of origination (yellows). It identified the arrival time to within a 30-minute window, eight hours before its impact with Earth’s atmosphere.
