Southwest Research Institute scientists have developed an improved technique for mapping the Sun using the surface flux transport (SFT) model to track magnetic activity on its surface. By weeding out false indications of magnetic activity from the helioseismic data, the technique provides an improved image of activity on the far side of the Sun with a higher probability of accuracy. In the images, green represents positive magnetic polarity, yellow represents negative magnetic polarity and gray indicates areas of weak magnetic polarity near zero.
