While the scientific community has traditionally considered the ice giants Neptune and Uranus as twin planets, SwRI contributed to a new study that found distinct chemical differences between the two. The findings hint that the materials making up the two planets came from different regions in the protoplanetary disk, which had distinct bands governing compositions. This figure explains where the building blocks for Uranus and Neptune may have formed in the protoplanetary disk orbiting the young Sun.
