Efforts in the development of several roadmaps have been led by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) including the development of a roadmap for Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and a roadmap for Condition Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+).

A roadmap provides the current state, the desired end state, and details the major steps in between to achieve the end state. Roadmaps can be developed in a number of different formats, ranging from relatively simple spreadsheets to large complex documents with individual subsections which could contain their own attachments. The determination of roadmap complexity is dependent on the program complexity and the level of detail required.
