Southwest Research Institute wins contract for Statewide Intelligent Transportation Systems in Texas

San Antonio, Texas --  September 19, 2002 -- The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has awarded Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) a contract to continue expanding Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) across the state.

The initial two-year statewide integration contract with the TxDOT Traffic Operations Division carries two renewal options of two years each and, if fully realized, could total in excess of $30 million. The new contract builds on a 1998 contract that made SwRI statewide integrator for ITS programs in Texas.

"In the past, ITS programs have focused mostly on metropolitan areas such as Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. They will continue to be major players, but the program in future years will also be reaching out to places like Laredo, Amarillo, Childress, and Waco," said Harry Grothues, ITS senior program manager for SwRI's Automation and Data Systems Division.

Under the contract, SwRI will provide strategic planning and information technology services and help ensure that national ITS standards are effectively deployed in TxDOT's ongoing statewide ITS development and integration program.

By developing core systems components and integrating the stand-alone systems that already exist in several cities into a compatible, uniform, and interoperable statewide program, TxDOT also will be able to integrate city-based ITS systems into broader regional systems, according to Grothues.

For example, TxDOT center-to-center communications could facilitate traffic flow along the I-10 corridor between San Antonio and Houston or create an emergency hurricane evacuation route along I-37 between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. The ITS systems also would be scalable for deployment in rural areas and smaller cities, Grothues said.

SwRI's experience with ITS technology dates back to 1993, when it was chosen as Software Design Review and Integration Consultant for the TransGuide™ Advanced Traffic Management System in San Antonio.
