Free Webinar: Avoiding Lateral Rotordynamic Instabilities in Turbomachinery
Join us Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m. (U.S. Central Time)
Hosts: Justin Hollingsworth and Chris Kulhanek
A review of the characteristics of lateral self-excited subsynchronous instabilities in turbomachines will be presented, with an emphasis on centrifugal compressors. Fundamental concepts to be discussed include: vulnerable rotor configurations, aerodynamic cross-coupling, logarithmic decrement, related industry standards, and the importance of rotor critical speed ratio. Methods for improving the behavior will also be discussed, including: the use of hole-pattern or honeycomb (as opposed to labyrinth) balance piston sealing surfaces, methods to reduce swirl (shunt holes and swirl brakes), bearing optimization, and the potential for employing integral squeeze film dampers. Appropriate testing and analysis techniques for common stability related issues will be covered, along with tactics for avoidance and feasible solutions.
