Air Filtration & Blowing Dust Testing

Engines and air compressors in agricultural, construction and locomotive applications require clean air for optimal combustion and machine life. Operating environments can contain air particulate contamination that can affect engine performance. Contaminants can degrade engine operation, accelerate wear and cause breakdown, making air filtration a critical part of the efficient operation of heavy-duty machinery.

The Air Filtration Laboratory at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) performs testing of air cleaner systems and related components by controlling the introduction of contaminants into airstreams. SwRI has project experience ranging from product development to large batch testing of full production components of air filtration that include standalone pre-cleaners, integrated pre-cleaners with and without scavenge flow, radial air cleaners, radial filters, panel filters and multistage systems.

ISO 5011 Air Filter Testing Services

The primary test method performed at SwRI for air filter testing is ISO 5011, Inlet air cleaning equipment for internal combustion engines and compressors — Performance testing. This includes using the parameters and procedures within ISO 5011 as guidance to perform bespoke tests not directly covered in the specification.

Air flow and contaminant injection are controlled to provide repeatable and application representative challenges to the test filters.

Typical Applications

  • Automotive Passenger Cars and Light Trucks
  • Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines
  • Mining Vehicles and Equipment
  • Construction Vehicles and Equipment
  • Agricultural Vehicles and Equipment
  • Locomotive Engines
  • Military Vehicles and Equipment

For ISO 5011 testing, the Air Filtration Laboratory at SwRI is accredited to ISO 17025 and can also meet Nuclear Quality Assurance requirements.

Bespoke & Custom Testing Solutions

In addition to air filtration testing, the Air Filtration Laboratory also provides both standardized and bespoke airborne dust testing services including dust settling, dust immersion, blowing sand, and blowing dust applications that provide external challenges to equipment such as computers, outdoor machinery, and ruggedized scientific equipment designed for outdoor operation. This testing is often conducted in conjunction with the Product Assurance group at SwRI.
