January 3, 2024 — Kevin Shannon, a manager in SwRI’s Fuels and Lubricants Research Division, has been awarded the prestigious Daniel H. Green Award by ASTM International, an international organization of over 30,000 professionals working to develop and publish technical standards for various industries.
The Daniel H. Green Award is given annually by the ASTM International Committee on Engine Coolants. The Green Award honors Shannon’s years of outstanding service and participation in the committee’s mission to “...develop international standards that play an important role in the engine coolants industry and address a wide range of technical challenges.”
Shannon has been a member of ASTM International’s D15 Committee on Engine Coolants since 2014. He received the committee’s Raymond H. Rudisill Award in 2019 for his ongoing contributions to the field.
“I’m deeply honored to have received this award from the Engine Coolants committee,” Shannon said. “Over the years, I have learned a great deal from the technical experts that make up the ASTM D15 membership, and it is extremely gratifying to be recognized by them as a fellow contributor to our shared industry goals.”
Shannon has been working with SwRI for almost 33 years. He joined the Institute in 1991 and was promoted to the manager position in the Fuels and Lubricants Research division in 2019. His work involves analytical instrumentation, laboratory management and projects related to fuels, lubricants, coolants and heat transfer fluids.
“Kevin’s involvement in the ASTM D15 Committee has allowed him to maintain constant support for that industry while enhancing operations at SwRI,” said Scott Hutzler, director of SwRI’s Fuels and Lubricants Research Department. “Kevin has been engaged with the industry to support improvement and modernization of current test stands and methods. With the continued importance of modern engine coolant technologies and increasing interest in thermal management fluids for electrified vehicles, we look forward to his expanding role in this area.”
Shannon received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma in 1991 and his master’s degree in environmental science from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 1994.
