UL 9540A Testing for Battery Energy Storage Systems

There are an increasing number of residential homes and commercial buildings turning to energy storage systems (ESS). There is a responsibility to guarantee the safety of these systems, not only for daily operation but also in the face of adverse conditions or unforeseen events. Fire hazards, thermal runaway and other risks associated with energy storage systems must be thoroughly understood and mitigated to ensure public safety and prevent costly incidents.

The UL 9540A Test Method,  the ANSI/CAN/UL Standard for Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems, helps identify potential hazards and vulnerabilities in energy storage systems, enabling manufacturers to make necessary design modifications to improve safety and reduce risks. With a proven safety benchmark, developers can confidently innovate and push the boundaries of energy storage technology, knowing that their products adhere to stringent safety standards. UL 9540A testing provides manufacturers with a competitive edge by demonstrating compliance with industry and regulatory safety requirements, opening doors to new markets and customers.

SwRI’s grid-connected energy storage facilities

SwRI performs R&D and testing for energy storage systems.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by experienced experts in energy storage safety. We perform UL 9540A testing in an indoor burn facility which utilizes a pollution abatement system that eliminates the release of harmful substances into the environment. We work closely with manufacturers and developers to tailor testing protocols to their specific products and requirements. Our goal is to not only ensure compliance but to help the customer exceed safety standards and excel in the market.

While SwRI has performed many UL 9540A development tests in the past, SwRI is slated to provide official UL 9540A certification at module and unit level. Third-party testing and certification from UL, a trusted global safety science organization, instills confidence in end-users and stakeholders, fostering trust in the client’s brand. With a world moving rapidly towards sustainable energy solutions, demonstrating the utmost commitment to safety through rigorous testing will set your business apart as an industry leader.
