Corrosion Testing & Research

Go to Corrosion Testing & Research

We conduct standardized tests, including ASTM, NACE/ISO and API, in addition to specialized tests for microbial corrosion and custom configurations. Accelerated atmospheric corrosion testing includes SAE J2334, GM 9540P and ASTM Salt Fog. Electrochemical measurements provide information on corrosion rate, coating performance, pitting and crevice corrosion, and more.

We analyze and predict performance of structural materials exposed to corrosion as well as other environmental factors including heat and structural stress.

Standard Corrosion Testing
A multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists offer a comprehensive approach to solving corrosion problems for government and industry. Flexible, customized tests are designed to meet the long- and short-term needs of the client.

Prediction of Materials Performance
Predicting the localized corrosion of process equipment is a major challenge because the environments in the process industry are complex and change over time.

Evaluation of Materials Performance in the Energy Industry
Evaluation of the performance of materials in high-pressure, high-temperature, aggressive environments encountered in the energy industries has been an integral part of SwRI programs for more than four decades.

Investigation of Corrosion in Fuels
Widespread use of biodiesels and ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuels has raised corrosion concerns in the engine manufacturing, fuel storage and regulatory communities.

Pipeline Integrity
The engineering staff has provided both technology development and services to support the natural gas distribution and transmission systems.

Coatings Exposure Testing in Arctic Environments
SwRI engineers offer a broad-based view of thermochemical performance of coating systems with environmental degradation caused by long-term cyclic exposure or localized corrosion-induced coating failure.

Corrosion Monitoring Sensor Technology
Monitoring corrosive environments and material loss in real time is critical for reduction in overall maintenance costs associated with routine inspections.

Corrosion Monitoring and Testing of Concrete and Steel Structures
SwRI is engaged in the development of novel coatings for steel reinforcements, corrosion modeling in concrete structures and wireless corrosion monitoring.
